Life’s Collections: Grade 12 Mixed Media Art Exhibition
This collection of work (haha no pun intended) explores the idea that our lives are comprised of collections: of objects, memories, emotions, and societal pressures. Each piece examines the ways in which these accumulations shape identity, influence perception, and define the personal and collective experience.
In Thanks for the Pressure @society, plaster and Barbie hands juxtaposed with nails symbolize the societal expectations and pressures that mold individuals, reflecting the invisible forces that structure our lives. Similarly, What’s in the Bag? uses photography to reveal the curated contents of a purse, highlighting the intimate choices we make about what to carry daily, and the persona those choices create.
Stop the Clock freezes childhood memories in resin, transforming small objects into a preserved collection that speaks to the significance of formative experiences. Hang in There uses fabric, thread, and needles to communicate emotional burdens, illustrating how accumulated pain can remain embedded and visible, yet contained within the everyday.
In Mommmmmm what’s for breakfast?, photography captures the intersection of stress, coping mechanisms, and early exposure to societal pressures, demonstrating how daily routines can reflect larger patterns of accumulation and consumption. Both Food for Thought and aaaaaaannnnnnddddddd POP! draw inspiration from Roy Lichtenstein’s pop-art style, using bold lines, saturated colour, and everyday imagery to explore how comfort foods and bottled-up emotions become collections of coping mechanisms - joyful on the surface but layered with complexity.
Across mediums - sculpture, photography, resin, fabric, and painting - these works collectively examine how the things we accumulate, whether tangible or intangible, define our experiences, shape our identities, and reflect the shared human condition.
